Last Friday I really began to learn how the planetarium programs are constructed and made,
helping to craft one of the kids’ shows. The preparation of the show turned out
to be a lot duller than I thought it would be: the main task was looking up
pictures and videos that fit with the story of the show (which was the story of
the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, or the Great and Little Bears). In
the end, I ended up using Google images to find images of bears, as well as
prints from various editions of Ovid’s Metamorphoses illustrating the story of
Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. Finally, I made a sort of storyboard for the
presentation, illustrating the story – in a sense, making a glorified
PowerPoint. Although this was kind of dull, I did gain some useful experience in story-boarding and planning a presentation, which will be helpful when I go to
make my final presentation. Furthermore, it was interesting to research the
story of the bears (which can be found here), as I've always liked mythology
and history. All in all, despite being somewhat boring, the day was a success.
